|Science-themed summer reading program kicks off at Omaha Public Library|
Fizz, Boom, Read! There’s no better time than summertime to discover reading for fun, and Omaha Public Library (OPL) invites you to experiment, learn and explore during the annual Summer Reading Program (SRP)! With free activities for all ages, OPL can help keep everyone in the family engaged through the summer. SRP kicks off May 30 and runs through July 31.
Join us for kick-off celebrations at OPL locations on May 30 and 31. The fun begins at W. Dale Clark Main Library, 215 S. 15th St. on May 30, 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Enjoy bubbles, sidewalk chalk, storytelling, music, vintage cars and more at this fabulous kick-off party. On May 31, visit your local branch (except Main Library) from 1-3 p.m. for a fun-filled afternoon of special activities. Register for the SRP and begin reading to earn fantastic prizes all summer long. Prizes for kids and teens include a collapsible water bottle, coupons to area entertainment venues, a book, vouchers to attend an Omaha Storm Chasers baseball game, and entries into a drawing for gift certificates and more.
In 2013 more than 17,700 people participated in SRP. This year, OPL has set a goal of 20,000 registrants. Participating in SRP is easy. Register at one of the upcoming OPL events, at omahalibrary.org, or at any of OPL’s 12 locations. Kids and teens can earn prizes by reading and/or listening to books for 10 hours and collecting 10 virtual badges. Audio CDs, eBooks and Playaways count for SRP as well. Log the time for books you read/listen to online to receive/be eligible to win prizes. Earning badges is simple, too! Visit your local branch, attend a program, or even use the library’s self-check machine, and be rewarded with an online badge.
There will be no excuses for those complaining of boredom this summer. OPL’s calendar is packed with entertaining, informative and interesting programs. Meet wild animals up-close, learn the science behind making ice cream, make your own BBQ salts and rubs, and build paper airplanes! From creating works of art to discussing books, OPL is here to help you beat the summer blues and the summer slump. See the full lineup in OPL’s all-in-one programming guide available at your local branch, or at omahalibrary.org. You may register for these activities online.
