|Dig into reading this summer at Omaha Public Library|
|May 24, 2013|
There’s no better time than summertime to read for fun, and Omaha Public Library (OPL) invites you to Dig Into Reading with us! With free activities for all ages, OPL helps you look Beneath the Surface of what the library has to offer and discover some Groundbreaking Reads. Summer Reading Program (SRP) kicks off June 1 and runs through July 31.
Join us for kick-off celebrations at Omaha Public Library locations on May 31 and June 1. The summer reading celebration begins at W. Dale Clark Main Library, 215 S. 15th St. on May 31, 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Enjoy bubbles, sidewalk chalk, storytelling, music, vintage cars and more at this fabulous kick-off party. On June 1, visit your local branch from 2-4 p.m. for a fun-filled afternoon of special activities. Register for the Summer Reading Program and begin reading to earn fantastic prizes all summer long. After the kids are tucked in for the night with a bedtime story, there will be a special adults-only kick-off party on June 1, 7-9 p.m., at Omaha Children’s Museum (OCM), 500 S. 20th St., 2nd floor. Adults ages 21 and over will receive free admission to tour OCM’s “A Bug’s World” exhibit, enjoy cocktails and refreshments, and even ride the carousel!
Participating in SRP couldn’t be easier. Register at one of the upcoming OPL events, at omahalibrary.org or at any of OPL’s 12 locations. Several registration options are available. The “Books” division is intended for kids who read or listen to picture books; “Hours” is for kids who enjoy chapter books; “Teens” and “Adults” are for those respective age groups. Share the fun! When you read a book aloud to another person, that book counts for both of you! Audio CDs, eBooks and Playaways count for SRP as well. Log the title or number of books you read/listen to online to receive or be eligible to win prizes.
There will be no excuses for those complaining of boredom this summer. OPL’s calendar is packed with entertaining, informative and interesting programs. From meeting wild animals up-close to finding fossils, cooking as a family or building a terrarium, and repurposing books to discussing them, we’re here to help you beat the summer blues and the summer slump! See the full lineup in OPL’s all-in-one programming guide available at your local branch, or at omahalibrary.org. You may register for these activities online.
In 2012 more than 24,000 people participated in SRP. This year, OPL has set a goal of 26,000 registrants.
