Being smart about money isn’t always easy. Staying smart about money can be even more of a challenge. Omaha Public Library and other area organizations are teaming together November 5-18 to present Money Smart Week in Nebraska. Throughout the week, a variety of free classes and events will be offered to help consumers learn to manage their personal finances. All programs are open to the public, but space is limited. - Monday, Nov. 5, 6:30 p.m. Retirement Series: Planning for Young Professionals at Milton R. Abrahams Branch, 5111 N. 90th St. The earlier you start, the more prepared you will be for retirement. Joe Elsasser and Kelli Watson will lead a discussion on the important steps young professionals should take in order to jumpstart their retirement planning.
- Tuesday, Nov. 6, 5 p.m. Super Couponing at Milton R. Abrahams Branch. Learn how to save big on everyday purchases just in time for the holidays. The program will be presented by Nicole McDonald of Mom Saves Money.
- Wednesday, Nov. 7, 1 p.m. Budget for Baby at South Omaha Library, 2808 Q St. Learn how to budget for your baby from a Consumer Credit Counseling financial counselor.
- Wednesday, Nov. 7, 4 p.m. How to Manage Your Own Credit File at Charles B. Washington Branch, 2868 Ames Ave. Learn how to read a credit report and how your score impacts your financial opportunities.
- Wednesday, Nov. 7, 6 p.m. Social Security and You at W. Clarke Swanson Branch, 9101 W. Dodge Rd. This workshop will address questions about managing social security options.
- Wednesday, Nov. 7, 6:30 p.m. Tracking Your Finances with Mint.com at Charles B. Washington Branch. Learn the basics of working with this free online financial tracking tool.
- Thursday, Nov. 8, 3 p.m. Path to Financial Freedom at Millard Branch, 13214 Westwood Ln. Learn how to find your way into financial well-being. This workshop will be presented by Paula Schulz, financial education specialist at First National Bank.
- Thursday, Nov. 8, 6:30 p.m. Retirement Series: Estate Planning at Milton R. Abrahams Branch. Learn about the planning necessary to avoid unnecessary expense later in life and upon death. Discover why is it important from both an emotional and financial perspective for you and your family to plan for potential incapacity and death now rather than later.
- Saturday, Nov. 10, 10 a.m. Extreme Couponing at South Omaha Library. Learn about money-saving couponing basics such as types of coupons, the anatomy of a coupon, coupon stacking and where to find coupons.
- Saturday, Nov. 10, 4:30 p.m. Small Business Nebraska at Charles B. Washington Branch. Michael Foutch, representing the Nebraska Small Business Administration, will discuss available funding, general preparation, and questions you may have about starting your own business.
- Tuesday, Nov. 13, 6 p.m. Your Credit Report and You at Bess Johnson Elkhorn Branch, 2100 Reading Plz. Learn how to read and repair your credit report, and how to set up a budget.
- Wednesday, Nov. 14, 6:30 p.m. Identity Theft at Benson Branch, 6015 Binney St. Learn how to protect yourself and your credit from identity theft.
- Thursday, Nov. 15, 1 p.m. Making Income Last in Retirement at Saddlebrook Branch, 14850 Laurel Ave. Address questions about retirement savings and available income options in a low-interest environment. Consider risks when evaluating your options, and plan for lifestyle changes and medical costs.
- Thursday, Nov. 15, 6:30 p.m. Paying for Long Term Care, Including Medicaid & Veterans’ Benefits at W. Clarke Swanson Branch. Attorney Nick Halibur will present an introduction to the options available for planning and paying for long term care needs. Learn several strategies for obtaining coverage for the high cost of care in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and in-home care services.
